Sander K is a Pioneer

Sanderfront

This Saturday it was once again Sander Kleinenberg's turn to master the turn tables on the main floor at Avalon on Vine Street in Hollywood. It had been roughly a year since he last appeared at this venue and I could sense the excitement in the air as I slowed down while passing the line that stretched far down the block.

For all of you that have yet to visit this club this means a lengthy line! The parking around the club starts out at $35 dollars flat rate for a parking space and as you drive further down Vine street the parking gets cheaper. As we approach the restless crowd of people waiting to enter the club we called our friend Eric that works on the inside and literally 2 minutes later we merged our way through a already sweaty lobby dance floor straight into the VIP section which overlooks the main dance floor.

The opening set was taken care of by Trent Cantrelle who is originally from New Orleans where he for several years was a resident DJ for big promoter Donnie "Disco" Estopinal. Trent set was Tech-house with many fun progressive turns that kept the floor inhabitants moving , definitely a perfect warm up for what was coming up.

The time passed, last call for alcohol and the eagerness for Sander was at its peak when he finally emerged out of the darkness and started flipping through his large cd case. The giant LCD screens displayed on each side of the podium lit up and now "Everybody" knew it was time. The words, "LOVE" "EVERYTHING" "ERASER" started rolling up and down the large screens and as he kicked off his first beat the club went absolutely berserk. It was beautiful.

For some reason I can't remember many of the new mixes he played but some of the highlights were; Bodyrox - Yeah Yeah (D Ramirez Mix), Mylo - Muscle Car (Sander Kleinenberg 'Pace Car' Mix). Something noticeable was the frequent sound of "Electro" that now is almost as predominent as everything else that influences his original sound. As a whole the set was just as good as I expected and overall I believe that most people there would agree on Sander being a Pioneer DJ. I've seen his DVDJ set develop over the years and I think its safe to say that he is alone at the top being the only DJ that successfully brings his sets across both visually and through his music.

Unfortunately before the set reached its end I had to get going but I left the scene smiling knowing I will be back next time for some more.

Monome

Monome 40H Preview2

The Monome project is a device made up of an 8 x 8 grid of tactile pushbuttons with LED feedback and MIDI sounds. A constant metronome-like wave passes over each column and plays any sounds turned on. By using a visual grid pattern, artists can create some amazingly intricate beats made up of 64 unique elements.

Another version of the Monome also exists with a larger 16 x 16 grid capable of playing 256 unique elements.

Check out this video. So damn cool!

Whale Species Dynabook

Dynabook Whale 01

UPDATE!
Researches are now sure its not a new whale species. It is in fact a new seal species. The whole music attribute threw everyone off. In fact, one researcher claims its
Hana Maru, the mysterious girlfriend of Sanrio's Bad Batz Maru.

A new mini whale species was discovered a few days ago. Scientists are naming it "Dynabook DAP" since it seems to be attached to the new Toshiba Dynabook CX. So far, the whale hasn't been seen alone outside of that. Researchers say the whale exists in some sore of symbiotic relationship with the laptop but don't worry, this whale's songs shouldn't just be limited to Dynabook users.

The tiny whale is capable of storing up to 512mb of songs with no DRM lock. That means he should be able to work with any USB equipped computer. The challenge is finding one alone :)

According to detailed observations, the Dynabook Whale is all white, has an audio jack on its left side, an LCD screen on its belly with a bevy of audio controls. First reports in say the whale's songs are of excellent quality.

I really want one. I'm hoping the Dynabook species will migrate to America someday, otherwise I might have to try and find this baby on ebay.

Kate Havnevik

Melankton

I haven't heard an album this lyrically inspiring since Bjork's Medulla release. Kate Havnevik is no noob tho. She's worked with numerous other cutting edge artists - my favorite being Royksopp.

Her voice seems one part Imogen Heap, one part Bjork, and one part Dido. She has the ability to control her tones so precisely, it sounds almost as if a computer is generating them. Go deeper and you'll find lyrics so poetic, they seem almost pagan in their comprehension. It's her ability to meld the musicality and the lyrical content together that creates something so new.

She's currently trying to figure out distribution but iTunes is selling her work exclusively so PLEASE give it a listen.

Moog Little Phatty

Mooglp 1

I love music, can read music, even play several wind instruments well. Unfortunately I always knew music was not an area I would excel at. You see, I can't think of or write my own melodies. Oh sure I've experimented with digital sounds - even hooked up Electroplankton to my computer to record them, but there's always one thing I wanted but could never afford; a Moog.

Yes these things costs $$$. I've always wanted a synthesizer so when I saw the new Moog Little Phatty (yes, that's really its name), I got excited. Then I found out it was small enough to be portable - I swooned. Then I found out it only costs $1,475 - I came "this" close to shelling out money for it.

The little tike has a modern front digital panel with four rotary encoders, 100 programmable memories, and everything is backlit. All in all, it''s an awesome design and if it bares Bob Moog's name, I'm sure it sounds great too.

Ummm, somebody buy me one?
