That's Fuggin' Thin

Amoled 01

I've always wondered why all flat panel manufacturers try and out-do one another with size. The apex of this battle was when Samsung unveiled it's 102" T.V. only to be kicked in the nuts by Panasonic and their 103" set the very next day. It's great that they can squeeze that many inches out of their diodes, but with that, girth also expands and the unit probably sucks up more electricity than anything else in your home.

So finally somebody wised up and figured out that people who want flat panels, want them because they're thin. Some R&D later, Samsung shows off its 12mm. thick AMOLED TV set called the SDI. The unit uses only a fraction of the power and features a 1000:1 contrast ratio while offering a 170ยบ viewing angle. Other than the thinness, what's really impressive is the screen response time of .01 ms. Can we say flicker free or what?

Is it just me or is that screen kinda sexy? I can honestly say I've never thought I'd say that about a screen, but it's so thin and looks pretty damn sweet.
