Do Not Kill The Polar Bear!

Knut Polarbear 01

Some animal rights activists in Germany want a baby polar bear killed. Say What?!?!

The cub name Knut or "Cute Knut" was abandoned by his mother. Out of love, zoo keepers decided to take the the cub in and raise it themselves. Much to their surprise, an animal rights group told the zoo Knut should be killed. They argue bandoned bear cubs have almost no chance or survival in the wild and keeping them captive only makes them unhappy and lonely.

The zoo argues polar bears are solitary by nature and killing Knut would serve no purpose. As for being unhappy, zoo keepers are weaning the 4 month old cub and he's already shot one ad campaign to promote environmental protection. He is healthy, energetic and full of life - far from being "abandoned".

Knut Polarbear 02

People have already fallen in love with Knut and to think that an ANIMAL RIGHTS group would actually condone killing him is heinous and most certainly immoral.

"If a polar bear mother rejected the baby, then I believe the zoo must follow the instincts of nature. In the wild, it would have been left to die." animal rights activist

Right, so next time I see a human newborn in a dumpster, I'll just ignore it and be well knowing "nature" is just following its course.

Those crazy German activists. I guess they really believe in the phrase "animal rights"; a right to live and a right to die too.

You cannot compare an animal to a human, like you cannot save all new born animals (you cannot save all humans either, but that's another story).

The question you should ask yourself is would you have reacted the same way if that "baby" wasn't as cute?

I'm not saying I would have killed it, but you can understand the reasons of the activists.

Saving an infant animal has nothing to do with it being cute. The polar bear is classified as an endangered species. Their endangerment stems from our carbon emissions melting away their native environment.

We as a sentient species on this planet have an obligation to save them, the best way we can. And even if it means Knute must live in captivity forever, he will grow to an old age happy and his image can serve to motivate others to act on our global problem.

Posted by: tranism at March 22, 2007 7:53 PM

I totally agree that we have to save endangered species, but the polar bear isn't classified as one.

They are vulnerable, but I think we should be more preoccupied by their environment and we should try to preserve that before each species that live within that habitat (which isn't really the case right now).

But like I said, I'm not saying I would have killed the bear, I would have done the same thing as what the zoo did, and let's hope, like you said, that this will motivate others to react. But all I'm saying is that this activist or whatever he may be, had his reasons to not want the humans 'raise' the bear and we should respect his point of view.

Posted by: Osam at March 23, 2007 10:14 PM

The poor thing should be allowed to die because that's what nature wants? By this logic endangered species should be allowed to be hunted to extinction and there should be no animal rights. Why? Because like it or not we are entirely a product of nature and every action we are capable of is therefore natural. We can't pick or choose when our actions are natural or unnatural.

If we choose to kill every animal on Earth and pump the atmosphere full of every gas we can manufacture, it may kill us and make the planet uninhabitable but this is still a natural course because we are as much a part of nature as any other species. The fact that nature produced us and gave us the power to destroy nature entirely means only that nature destroyed itself. However, we have the foresight to see the results of our actions and so we can choose to act differently. There is absolutely no reason why choosing to kill this polar bear is any more or less natural than letting it live, because as a part of nature we are unable to do anything that is unnatural.

Posted by: logicparty at March 25, 2007 5:41 PM

Yeah, this is just silliness. Like "nature" really intended us to build things and alter our environment.

Yeah we did and look what happened.

OK, not the greatest argument for not killing the bear. :(

Posted by: ThePete at March 28, 2007 8:50 PM

why would you kill him he is innocent he did nothing its like killing one of us.HUMANS

Posted by: fgh at April 6, 2007 11:49 AM

I don't think it was about us killing him, but simply what would happen in the nature where we are not supposed to be.

The German guy was only making a point that our job isn't to raise wild animals, but to try to save their environnement, because the animals are well aware of what to do to keep themselves alive without our help (except some cases).

But since this bear was in a zoo already (is it the case?), their is no valable reason to kill him .

Posted by: Osam at April 6, 2007 12:27 PM

This old news... Knut, if you have been following the story, is not and has never been in danger of being killed.

The so-called "animal rights activists" was a sole person at the Berlin zoo who voiced an opinion, and later, when asked to expound on his opinion, said he had been misquoted.

The cute little polar bear is in no danger, and is, in fact, being well cared for, both by the Berlin zoo, his keeper, Mr. Dorflein, and the German people. And I, for one, am glad to see that this is so.

I love this little bear and think the zoo did a beautiful thing. Accidents happen in nature. If the mom rejected her baby, then maybe the mom was not ready or did not know how to raise young. It's like a baby bird. If it falls from a nest, do you leave it or put it back if possible! I would love to see updated photos and stories of Knute.

Posted by: catskittens at June 7, 2007 10:25 PM

i think the bear should live!!!!

Posted by: Danny at June 18, 2007 2:29 AM

Knute is the cutest and sweetist thing. I am so glad the Germany is caring for him. I would love to see him now, and have updates on him. Thank you for loving him. Jerri

I think that it was good they are raising him. These creatures are an endangered species. What good would it do killing him? One less polar bear in the world. Its a small number, but it can do a big amount difference.
ps. did you know, that every hour, 19 species dissapear from the world forever?

Posted by: Nicole at December 15, 2007 12:25 PM

polar bear cubs are so cute why would people want to kill them?

Posted by: alliemo at December 31, 2007 4:39 PM

First thing why would you kill any animal in the world because the animals don't have any less value then we do. And I wouldn't kill a baby cub of any kind because they have a life to live and people should think about the poor little animals in the world that are tring to live thier life. and the second thing is leave the animals in the wild alone unless they need to be helped. So don't kill animals....

Posted by: jen at January 7, 2008 3:48 PM

as long as the animal is not killed it can die in nature.

Posted by: jen at January 7, 2008 3:50 PM

and?

Posted by: fipos at January 15, 2008 9:13 AM

Oh my gosh!! How can anyone even think of doing anything like that to inoceint little Knut?!?!?!? It's sad, I hate it when animals are killed, they can die naturaly, but not by being killed! Also, i would have acted the way the zoo did no matter what animal! Cute or not, large or small, they're all animals and they desever a chance to live, just like humans do.

Posted by: Elizabeth at January 15, 2008 10:21 AM

Thanks to the SUPREME A-Hole George W. Who wants to deny women the right to choose, yet wants to destroy us all with war, global warming you name it.
