60,000 Volts

Is that enough to shock the auto industry into changing direction and follwing GM's lead? Maybe. General Motors, after years lagging behind Toyota and Honda in green tech have announced the possibility of mass producing the all electric Chevy Volt. If you haven't heard of the Volt, I wrote about it some months back. Could this be America's answer to the Prius?
The game plan is to sell 60,000 Volts when it's released in 2010. Although the car looks all concept, the technology is all there and ready for mass production. A few weeks ago it was even announced that GM had sealed a deal with a 3rd party regarding lithium ion batteries while Toyota back tracked on an all electric vehicle because they had not yet possessed the lithium ion tech.
It's really a do or die situation for GM. They need to differentiate themselves from Ford and compete against the Japanese and upcoming Korean giants. They didn't anticipate the industry buzz when they announced the Volt but it seems all the puzzle pieces are there. It's up to GM to put them together.
