Britney's Blackout

britney-blackout_cover.jpg

True, Britney does have major issues, be it her own fault or the media for the feeding frenzy of attention they give her but there's no denying her new album "Blackout" is catchy. It sounds like a cross between Madonna's last two albums, Confessions On A Dancefloor and American Life infused with hip hop rhythms. Britney even raps. In a word, it's "dancy". That being said, the lyrics are totally benign. They seem to string along only to provide a decent rhythm and rhyme so don't look for any hidden, deep meanings.

One song stands out as the odd duck. A track called "Heaven on Earth" sounds like it was written and produced for a competely different album. The beat and hook are totally 80's, bouncy, a little new wave, with a lot of pop sensibility. Just imagine if Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" was remixed by OMD or the Thompson Twins. Britney's squeeky voice actually fits better here than on any of the other tracks where she overtly sounds sexual.

Speaking of being overly sexual, I think that's the biggest pitfall on Blackout. Britney needs to quit with that sh*t. It doesn't work for her. It's not a sophisticated sexy, it's a trashy sexy - sexy only because she's naked and you've haven't had some in a year.

All in all it's a good album, definitely something that'll make you shake your ass. I give her one and a half thumbs up, or 3.5 out of 5 stars, or a 7 out of 10 on the richter scale.

Listen to her entire album at MTV.
