Cock Climbing

I apologize for the title but I had to. See, a friend sent me this link and the title describes it to the tee. A wall full of illuminated condoms fully erect. Don't turn away tho, there's artistic merit here. It's just one of many pieces on display at the "Sex in Design/Design in Sex" exhibition. Everything from dildos, butt plugs, to very unique urinals. Where might one see this? At the Museum of Sex in New York City of course.
Thanks Jeff!

Radiator With A Twist

People with old school radiators aren't left with many options on how to hide it. You can cover it but that defeats its purpose since it can't radiate. The Marco Dess Wall Radiator can easily replace those old furnaces with a more modern unit. What's more, each ceramic plate can rotate to personalize a look. Turning the first plate also turns the unit on/off.

Planet Nibiru
A reptilian race from the planet Nibiru came to Earth in search of minerals? They carried out hybridization experiments which almost all life here descend from? Sounds crazy but throughout history, ancient cultures pass on similar stories. Cultures that had no contact with each other yet has similar lores.

Pollen Robots Are Secretly Plotting

Japanese scientists created these spherical robots to measure pollen content as an advance warning system for allergy sufferers. Their eye color changes to reflect what kind of pollen is in the air.
What the scientists don't tell you is these pollen bots are secretly plotting a worldwide takeover by giving us false information. I'm telling you, with all those cables hanging around, and the glowing eyes, this is just a precursor to the borg. Until that rueful day, check out their real-time pollen map.

Guitar Hero Super Hacks
The phenomenon known as Guitar Hero allows everyday folk to feel like rock stars in their own living rooms. A homebrew band known as the Guitar Zeros have taken that concept one step further, by rocking out on stage playing original music, all with instruments from the Guitar Hero video game. By writing software that allows them to create thousands of sounds with the Guitar Hero instruments, the Guitar Zeros have proven that they're anything but.

Spotify is Awesome
Spotify's goal is to create one of the worlds largest collections of music streaming on demand, all free and available anytime from anywhere.
I got my invitation to try the Beta a few days ago (thanks Bjorn) and I totally love it. Not every category or song I've searched for is on there yet but there's already a ton of stuff and it works great.
All their files are carefully ordered and tagged with metadata that makes it easy to look up any particular song. If you're looking for a title from a certain year simply include the year with the artist in your search, you could even ad an array of things making your search real specific.
The application is like I said still Beta and I'm sure there are several features to be added in the near future.
Check out their site for more information, if you ask them real nicely perhaps they shoot you an invite : )

Man Creates Artifical Life

See that man there? Dr. Craig Venter has successfully created the first man-made DNA strand thus taking him only one step away from creating artificial life. Pundits will say scientists are trying to play God but the opposite camp would argue our new understanding of organic molecular architecture can open up doors to new fields of medicine.

Solar Water Distiller

This floating Hershy's Kiss is actually a solar distiller. It can create between 1-4 pints of clean drinking water out of the sea per day. That's not really enough for one person but hey, it's solar powered. That's a lot better than what 99.9% of us are using. However the $200 is a bit exorbitant.

Fly Spy

A tiny microbotic fly built by researchers at Harvard University is currently on display at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The life-sized 'Flybot' reportedly has a wingspan of 1.2 inches and weighs a mere 0.002 ounces. What's more sinister is the project is funded by the US Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency, who hopes to gain access to micro-miniature surveillance technologies.

Alanis Goes Underneath
Please let this be a sign that 2008 will see some great music. I'm so happy Alanis is back. "Underneath was produced by Guy Sigsworth, the man responsible for Frou Frou aka Imogen Heap. Lyrics after the jump. Ooh I wonder if she's talking about her ex Ryan Reynolds.
Look at us in this kitchen
Look at us rallying all our defenses
Look at us waging war in our bedroom
Look at us jumping ship in our dialogues
There is no difference
In what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as big as it does out there
So why spend all our time undressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause
right here all underneath.
Look at us form our cliques in our sandbox
Look at us being cruel kids with both our hearts blocked
Look at us turn away from all the rough spots
Look at dictatorship on my own block
There is no difference
In what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as big as it does out there
So why spend all our time undressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause
right here all underneath.
How I've spun my wheels
With carts before my horse
And shine on the outside springs from gloom
Spotlight on these seeds of simpler reasons
And score bourne into corn, stretching my limit
There is no difference
In what we're doing in here
That doesn't show up as big as it does out there
So why spend all our time undressing our bandages
When we've the ultimate key to the cause
right here all underneath.

Battle On The High Seas

Did you know there's a war off the coast of Antarctica? Between Japan's whaling fleet and environmentalists. There's been a worldwide whaling ban since 1986 but Japan hunts 1000 whales annually in the name of science which skirts the treaty.
The latest show down involves environmentalists chasing down the whaling ships and boarding them. Japan has declared it an act if piracy while the environmentalists claim they're being held hostage. Australia is doing its best to mediate but with the whaling ban ending in a few years, it seems no immediate resolution is in sight.
So what do you think? Japan views whaling as a cultural right while the rest of the world sees it as a conservation issue.

Elastic House Is Shaky

The elastic houses are made for those who like instability and precarious, who like to be awakened by the sound of the rain, those who like to sleep under the overturned boats. They will be recalled at any time to the realities of gravity, rocked by wind and earthquakes. The elastic houses therefore ask its inhabitants a strong sense of balance and a real taste for the experimental.

Fisker Karma Live

One of the cars I'm most interested in is the Fisker Karma, officially making an appearance at NAIAS. The hybrid sports sedan is the first of it's kind utilizing lithium ion batteries combined with a 4-banger. That may sound kinda weak on paper but it goes 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. That's nothing to laugh at. The Karma can roll 50 miles on pure silent electric power before the gas engine kicks in to recharge. Like the Prius, the transition is seamless. For faster speeds (up to 125mph), both the electric and gas work in tandem. All are supplemented by the solar cells integrated into the roof.
Outside the engine bay is an very unique design that looks more concept than production. Henry Fisker went all out on this one. You can take delivery in 2009. How much? Just $80,000. That's a lot less than I expected for a luxury maker like Fisker, especially for a hybrid. I'd be much more impressed if I saw one of these rolling down the streets instead of the usual Maseratis or Ferraris in Beverly Hills.

Don't sleep on this song or Goldfrapp's upcoming album Seventh Tree. The video is mesmerizing. Yes, sonically different from her previous two albums, but there's a distant connection to her first album Felt Mountain. Guillermo del Toro's "El Orphanato" (The Orphanage) is one of the finest modern ghost stories I've seen. Without spoiling the movie, he manages to craft a suspense thriller without the use of big special effects. Smarter Clothing Labels

RFID is the name of the game and pretty soon we'll see it reach mainstream in some very unexpected applications. One in particular is the ClothTAG. Meant to replace current garment care labels, the ClothTAG uses RFID technology to tell your washer and dryer what settings to use. Of course, that requires you to have RFID enabled appliances. If you don't, no worries. The RFID circuitry cleverly mimics icons found in current garment care labels so you'll still know how best to wash your undies the old fashioned way.

Shaken, Not Stirred

The Bello PMP concept by designer Ryan Han looks to be just another touchscreen doodad currently flooding the market but upon closer inspection, it does a lot more.

First off the simplicity in the design is quite gorgeous in an understated way. The entire surface is a touchscreen framed in a glass bezel. Finger swipes and flicks ala iPod Touch navigate across menus but the Bello ups the ante by integrating hand gestures for deeper controls.
For example when you shake the Bello, all you personal files change into little icons that can be stacked and organized. It beats having to drill down thru 2-3 steps of menus. Perhaps the coolest feature is what I call "teapotting." Simply gesture as if you're pouring tea over another Bello to initiate a file transfer. Bravo!

Parkinsons Linked To Pollution
After years of debate, some scientists are finally agreeing there's a link between parkinsons and pollutants, particularly TCE which is found in many cleaning solvents. The research is based on a 25 year study on workers who had contact with TCE now mostly only found in industrial areas.

Fujitsu Laptops Might Be Plushy

At least in concept they will be. Fujitsu unveiled a trio of concepts at CES. The plush laptop caught my eye because it's brilliant. I find myself falling asleep with my laptop all the time. Would be nice if I could just nuzzle it like a mini-pillow. Of course, Fujitsu didn't explain how they would make such a product but then again that's why they call it a concept.
Reminds me of the Soft Little TV from Sony. Could they be on to something? Maybe future electronics will be all about soft pliable materials instead of the super thin hard surfaces we see emerging today.

The big CES electronics show in Vegas is very alluring but I sat this one out because frankly, I'm still recovering from last year's event. Too much walking and people on their Blackberries trying to sound important. I digress.
One newbie electronic I'm particularly interested in is the OptiMax-i iPod dock/projector. It's not the brightest projector at just 14 lumens nor is it the biggest outputting below VGA resolution. A Growling Place

One girl's amazing adventure begins in her bedroom, on the night that the wind blows her bear away. In vivid dreamscapes, little Aril follows after her bear with the help of a sparrow, through the air and over land and water, until she finds herself in "a growling place," in the company of bears!
I know it's a children's book but you've got to read it. I swear it's more visceral and surreal than even the most complex art films. There's something sublime about innocence when it's laid out to bare. It reignites old imagination flames you thought were put out long ago.

Bush Admin Removes Enviro Protection, Approves Logging

It's sad but true. The Bush Administration is busy working back door deals to remove environmental protection laws over Oregon's Old Growth Forest to the tune of a 700% increase in logging if passed. The forests are OLD and some trees are ANCIENT. They've been there long before humans even settled in Oregon. They not only add to the natural majestic beauty of Oregon but provide shelter for many animals and natural flood protection.
It's disappointing to know all that money could be spent on educating the public about recycling and building new sustainable facilities to support new industries but I guess with the Bush Administration, stuffing coffers is more important.

A brood of rare albino alligators were stolen from a zoo in Brazil over the weekend. There were no signs of break-ins so officials think it may be an inside job. Each one of the baby alligators could fetch upwards of $10k on the black market.
Albino alligators are extremely rare because most die in the wild since they lose their camo. Unfortunately it seems this brood isn't going to do well in captivity either. They could end up as exotic pets or the skin of some hot shoe or purse.

Playing With Sperm
OMG, I've been wanting to use that title since day one of this blog. Hell I even wanted it as a tagline but alas, it didn't fit.
Thank my lucky stars some mad typographist by the name of Oded Ezer made it possible. What you see here is his project called Typosperma. The idea is to combine sperm and type into a biological design. Weird but if I can get them to spell out my name then I'm all for it.

Big Ass Cat Paw

Who doesn't want one?!?! It's so brilliant, I wish I would have thought of it first. It's pretty realistic (for a cartoon cat), even right down to the pink paw pads. Unfortunately no claws tho. Sorry frat boys. I know what you were thinking.
No idea where to buy one but I saw it at TFTS. Hit the jump for another pic.

Keep One's Nose To The Grindstone

The ultra minimalistic Freedom Mobile Phone by designer Vadim Kibardin is gorgeous by any standard but it's just a concept for now. Specifically designed for chronic travelers who need to stay in touch, instead of paying outrageous roaming charges you just buy one of these. They come charged with 200 minutes which you can recharge at any time. Each one also has it's own number that works internationally. No SIM card or mobile contracts needed. Sound idea but what about this design?
I'm all for minimalist designs but this is one that's a little too far in. First off there's no screen so how am I supposed to know if I've dialed the correct number? Second, the ultra thin form factor is just begging for chronic hand pains. Fix those two problems and BRING IT ON!

Check Your Back

This resplendently brilliant photo published in Britain's Daily Mail immediately caught my eye as I skimmed this morning's news feeds. Marine biologist Trey Snow hopped on his kayak hoping to catch a glimpse of the illusive great white shark but to his surprise, a HUGE great white was stalking him.
Fortunately the shark figured out Troy's seal like silhouette was not food and the hunt quickly changed into playful curiosity. A reminder although sharks are feared, most never attack humans. They have more to fear from us.

Better Clothed And Fed Than Me

For the dog that has everything, why not some ruff diamonds? Vivienne Westwood is teaming up with jewelry designers to create a line of jewel encrusted collars to present at the upcoming Pet a Porter show. I'm not kidding.
The collar/jacket combo above is covered in diamonds and sapphires. If you want one, it'll cost you a small fortune which is precisely why all 35 tickets to the show are going to celebs who have cash to burn.

Adopt Me A Misio

I'm interested in this new project called Misio which asks you to adopt a crochet doll complete with his/her own name and bio. The idea is you as the parent document Misio's travels akin to the whole travel gnome thing and post it to the Misio website. The community of Misio parents, whom are from all around the world, can see where all the Misios have been.
It costs $60 to adopt and there are only a handful left. Will someone adopt one for me? I'd love to have a Misio to take on adventures.

Miko Gets A New Bowl

My dog Miko is spoiled. Ask any of my friends and they'll tell you. I don't care tho. I'm going to take it to the next level and get him this beautiful bowl called Coco's China. I mean white porcelain on a walnut base? That is gorgeous and for $99 it better be.

Mazda Furai is a Thing of Beauty

Out of all the big auto manufacturers, I am most impressed with what Mazda has done with it's wind inspired concept vehicles. The latest is the Furai which won't officially be unveiled til' the Detroit Auto Show but I like early surprises.
Like it's brothers the Taiki, Hakaze, Ryuga, and Nagare; the Furai has a wind carved body but injects a HUGE load of performance with a 450 horsepower rotary engine. You'd be amiss to think it's just another gas guzzler because this beauty runs on pure E100 ethanol - clean burning and Earth friendly.

Where The Wild Things Are 2nd Image

Here's a new image from Spike Jonze's "Where The Wild Things Are". I first wrote about it many moons ago and it seems I'm not the only one super excited about this remake.
Alas October 2008 seems so far away.

iPhone App iLyric Player Is Karaoke'tastic
My friends and I are Karaoke junkies. At almost every get together the preprogrammed mics filled with thousands of songs come out and with enough booze in our systems; we get to sangin'. This brilliant iPhone application called iLyric Player streams lyrics in sync with the song playing. It even lets you rearrange the timing for group sing-a-longs.
