I don't know if this is just contained to the Swedes. Lately, there's been a new trend in modern cat furniture that finally replaces those carpet-covered monstrosities. Personally, I've found that when my own cats are given the means to express their natural instincts (like climbing) they spend all of their time on their furniture and leave mine alone.
