Federal Judge Rules Bloggers Are Journalists
I'm not sure how it is in other countries but in the U.S., bloggers did not have the same protection journalists had, that is until today. A federal judge ruled that bloggers are now protected as journalists and are afforded all the same rights under the 1st amendment - freedom of speech, freedom of the press.
The whole ordeal started when a blogger name Philip Smith got in trouble for using the corporate logo of a company he had a bad experience with in a scathing post. I didn't even know that was illegal. In true American fashion the company went after him and soon lawsuits were flying. But instead of bowing down, he decided to fight. So if you're a blogger and happen to run into someone by the name of Philip Smith, please thank him. This should make it a lot easier to get press passes to conventions and expos now.

Flip and Tumble

Reusable bags are so in right now and I hope they stay that way. I made the switch to reusable bags earlier this year and I'm so glad I did. Most stores give you a refund of some kind for not using their plastic so it couldn't be any easier. That hardest part is remembering to bring the bags with you. I just toss them in the pantry and like mysterious socks, they disappear. Thats why I'm loving the Flip & Tumble bags.

Made from rip stop nylon, these bags can carry up to 20 lbs. Their big enough to hold three 2-liter bottles and the strap is padded for tired shoulders. The cool thing is you can roll them up and flip them inside out like a pair of socks. Each bag is $15, a little pricey but they do come in several different color combinations and they're stylish enough to use as a general tote or gym bag.

Bambi Is A Horror Flick

Bambi made Time's top 25 horror films. Technically it landed at number 20 but Bambi? A horror flick?
I mean early Disney feature length animated films did deal with subjects that the current Disney would never touch. Death, abandonment, drugs, murderous plots - all themes that parents today might think twice about taking their kids to. Nonetheless, the death scene in Bambi definitely wrenched my poor little boy heart. I remember being very sad for days because up until that point, I had no visual for what death and loss looked liked.

Pleo's Ready For Halloween

Remember Pleo - the robotic dinosaur that responds to all sorts of stimuli like touch and sound? Well the designers wanted to know if it would still work wearing a sheep's costume? How cute does Pleo look! I love it and I demand the makers of Pleo release clothing options for my future Pleo.
And to answer their question, yes Pleo still works wearing sheep's clothing. Aw it looks so peaceful. . . until it roars.

Safer In A Wild World

Hey readers, Mitsubishi is holding a short film contest and this week's entry called "Safer" is my favorite so far. It comes from my boy's James Calvert and Eddie White; an animated story of how a drive thru a wild forest scares our little protagonist but of course there's nothing to fear inside a Mitsubishi Lancer.
Voting doesn't actually begin until November 19th but one lucky voter will win a Mitsubishi Lancer and believe me, this car is AWESOME. Mark the date on your calendars peeps!
Mitsubishi Supershort contest entires.

Manholes Making Sewers A Little Prettier

The next time you're in Japan, pay attention to sewer openings and manhole covers. It's easy to miss but you'll be glad if you stop because they're really nice.

No two manholes are the same with some depicting history while other are a bit more kawaii in nature. Regardless of design, they're intricate and are yet just one other fascinating tidbit about Japan.
And FYI, that is not a Swastika. That is a Buddhist symbol that was used long before the Nazis. In fact, many ancient cultures have used that symbol.

Grassfiti

Artist Edina Tokodi doesn't like that we have such a huge disconnect with nature and living in urban areas only further separates us. Bringing in green is the trend nowadays but she wanted to make a bigger statement, something that resonates with urban culture yet remains very organic and tactile like nature. So if you're ever in Brooklyn look for her grass graffiti works and make sure you touch it. That's the whole point.

You've Been Outed

You've probably already heard but this past Friday during a Q&A period, J.K. Rowling revealed Albus Dumbledore is gay. Ring the bells and somebody get the pink confetti. We have a winner.
"My truthful answer to you. . . I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. . . Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald (his arch nemesis from when he was a young man) and it saddened him when he discovered just how evil Grindelwald was. . ."
"Yeah that's how I always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the film, 'I knew a girl once who's hair. . .' I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, 'Dumbledore's gay!'"
Did I suspect this? No. Does it make sense? Sorta, I mean he was the Headmaster. (Ducks and runs for cover).

You Happy?

When the Dalai Lama was asked if he was a happy man, he replied;
"Emotions will rise and fall like waves on the ocean, but underneath at its center the water is always calm."
Brills!

Put Your Finger In It, I DARE You
Doesn't it look like some kind of futuristic Chinese finger trap puzzle? It's not tho but what I will tell you is that hole can open and close. Hit the jump to find out what it is.
Ah, it's just a cool candle holder called the Pupill. The hole in the middle can be adjusted to fit anything from a tea light to a pillar candle. Top that off with some sweet polished chrome and you've got yourself one groovy candle holder. Got $60? That's how much one will cost ye.

Warm Hands Are Happy Hands
If you didn't know by now, I'm obsessed with hand warmers. I already have the USB powered Thanko Pad and the Sanyo Kairo Pebble. I find them to be comforting and this latest hand warmer from Zippo is just right to add to my collection. It's sleek, compact, sexy, and lasts up to 24 hours on just 0.4 oz. of fuel. There's no fire hazard either since the warming element comes from a glass fiber burner insider. Like all Zippo lighters, it's reusable and easy to stow away in your pocket.
Awesome stocking stuffer for just $30.

I See Olympic Rings
Dangerously close to infringing on the Olympic ring's trademark, Amnesty International created an ad to bring attention to China's human rights problems for the upcoming games in Beijing. Pretty provocative. I too disagree with China's treatment of journalists, scientists, students, and ethnic minorities. I think it's a good idea to remind people during the celebratory games that all the new pomp and circumstance are just masks of deeper problems within the country.

The Elephants Are Coming!
To celebrate Charles Eames' centennial, his family put together a little stop motion short starring the molded plywood elephant. You may have seen the elephant in magazines but they were never in stores, unless you have one of the imitation knock-offs. That's because Charles Eames never sent them into production after he designed them in 1945. To compliment the film, the elephants are now in production for a very limited run. Get 'em while they're hot!
Watch the short film here.

Rad Bunny Ad For Sony Bravia
Oh snap! The long awaited Sony Bravia Play-Doh ad is finished. Directed by Frank Budgen and Darren Walsh. I've blogged about the bunnies before when life sized figures started appearing all over NYC. The ad came out really well tho it doesn't make me want a Sony Bravia TV. What I really want is one of those bunnies.

The Miniature Earth
If you could proportionately reduce our World to just 100 people, what would that microcosm look like? What would it say about us? Watch this presentation called The Miniature Earth and think about it.
"If there were only 100 people in the world, 6 of them would own 75% of it."
