American Cement Building

Acb 02

I drove by this awesome building in Los Angeles and immediately did some research to find out what it was. It's called the American Cement Building - an old chocolate factory from the 1960's converted into lofts. The architecture is beautiful. The exterior grid surrounds a glass facade facing downtown Los Angeles. I can only guess how much it must cost to live there. It sort of reminds me of Toyo Ito if she were forced to stay geometric.

I know this building well. It's near MacArthur Park/Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. I lived two blocks away while attending Otis/Parsons School of Design. In this very building Otis had their Fashion Design Rooms on the 7th Floor (if I remember correctly). At the time I attended Otis, the lake (seen in one of the photos above) was drained due to construction of the Red Line subway corridor underneath. I sat in class & watched as two bodies were pulled from the gook at the bottom of the lake.

Yes. Nice building, and yes - sketchy neighborhood.
Oh, and I wonder what ever happened to that yellow-smilie who always spat on himself when he mumbled "Yo wan some spank...no?"

*happy*times*

"It's called the American Cement Building - an old chocolate factory"

Actually it was the headquarters of the American Cement company. I suspect the "chocolate factory" confusion arose because the Dwell TV program, on the Fine Living network, did a piece on it AS WELL as a piece on an old chocolate factory, and a Web search brings up that reference.

This building also has a sculpture that was commissioned for the reinforced concrete design. His name is Malcolm Leland, now retired. Vessel USA Inc. has just released some fantastic bookend replicas.... http://www.architecturalpottery.com/gallery1.htm
