The Abandoned City San Zhi (part 2)

Sanzhi Vaca 05

I got a lot of emails regarding a recent post about an abandoned site in Taiwan consisting of podular housing off the northern coast of the country. It took me awhile but I've found more pictures (in color) of the site and more info.

The area is called San Zhi. There are no named architects since the whole site was commissioned by the government and several local firms. They were trying to create a posh luxurious vacation spot for the affluent and rich streaming out of Taipei. Now this is where things get weird. The local papers say there were numerous accidents during its construction, and as news spread to the urbanites of the island state, nobody wanted to vacation there, much less visit. Locals say the area is now haunted by those who died in vain and because they are not remembered, they linger there unable to pass on.

This explains why the area was abandoned. If the site is haunted, no amount of redevelopment is going to bring the masses to that spot. Even demolishing it is out of the question because destroying the homes of spirits and lost souls is a HUGE no-no in Asian culture.

The aerial shot is kinda creepy looking. overall theyre are amazingly close tothe waters edge be it ocean or a river.
Id love to hear more about why they beleive its haunted, perhaps strange events occurred or ghostly apparitions. the top photo does look like someone is in the building.
youd also think they would want to demolish the building and perhaps put up a shrine in memorium?! and have the sites blessed.

Haunted? That sounds pretty fucking stupid. There are no such things as ghosts, god or any of that type of crap. When you die animals and worms eat your remains and poop you out. Supernatural superstition is only believed by those who are afraid to die.

I'm surprised it isn't infested with squaters. They tend not to worry about ghosts and other such nonexistents.

The voices in my head tell me that ghosts exist...

Why do they build a small memorial outside the main enterance, bless it, and ask to rebuild. Then at the same time work on publicity for tourism of the island. Once they have that they could revamp the pods to a little more modern style. After people start coming they could even publish a book filled with pictures and stories of it being built, abandoned, and then rebuilt. Also giving the "souls" who died a chance to move on.

Quote from gunmetalblue: "Supernatural superstition is only believed by those who are afraid to die."

Everyone's afraid to die. If you think you're not, you're in denial. Try it some time and see.

Sounds like a wonderful place to build an atheist, naked hedonist resort. Nobody would have to worry about local intruders and busy-bodies and the beach is close by.

Posted by: Skeptic at August 31, 2006 7:31 AM

gunmetalblue,

your a fucking ignorant idiot, give me your address and let's see how afraid you are. If only you can comprehend your atheistic nothingness after you die, then perhaps you won't throw around childish quotes thinking it's building up your ego and maybe get you laid tonight. all you've ever known is what you see, feel, hear, etc. How about you shove in some ear plugs, load up on caffine, get someone to tie you up and throw you in a dark closet and just tell yourself, I'm alright with this, this is what I'm living for.

This isn't even close to comprehending death, but i'm sure you couldn't last an hour anyway.

On topic, this is beautiful. I can imagine it being overly silent and any little noise would scare the crap out of you. I've swear I've seen something like this before but as a concept drawing. Makes it even more freaky. I'd visit he place if i was in the area.

Posted by: Thanaotssassin at September 3, 2006 9:24 AM

Go scott and skeptic haha. As i was just scrolling down having been sent the link and i saw that dude's comment i thought only one thing...

"wanker."

I can't be arsed explaining further, i'm sure you all feel similarly anyway...what an opinionated prick. I have bets on that he's like thirteen.

Hm... I guess one could mix all this with a little hair, water and we'd have another asian horror flick in our hands. It could be a good one!

Posted by: Renato at September 5, 2006 6:44 AM

Curious thing; the comments drift from an amusing cultural piece, to a telling self-indictment by "atheists", then back. The fervence by which anyone advocates a specific model of the unknown as "truth"--as opposed to displaying indifference--indicates the degree to which that individual is a faithful adherent to a religion (in this case atheism, for those who can't take the suspense). Conclusion: ghosts are of greater economic value, if nothing else, among H. sapiens consumers in general, and may be among Asian horror flick affecionados as a whole, if we dare.

so how much does one of these things cost?

like come on

who wouldn't want one of these party pads

the ghosts can come too

but no really

I want one!

Posted by: alphabastard at September 5, 2006 5:12 PM

HAHA! Wow...comments all over the place. Where in I don't agree with athiest, I don't see why he is being attacked...but you also have to be prepared for it when you comment. Am I scared to die? No. Am I scared of HOW I'm going to die? You can bet your buttons I am!! What's wierd is that a lot of places make lots of extra money because they are haunted and people love to be around things like that...they could fix up the place and market it that way. What it comes down to is that they just don't want it. No one wants to deal with it. Sad. What a waste. I got the best laugh from Lou. PARTY AT LOU'S PLACE (once Lou gets it all fixed up.)

gun metal blue is the only one here that speaks any sense. there IS no after-life, get over it. you die, thats it. wtf is there to be scared of. ignorant fools hiding behind the charade that there is some kind of mythical 'god' creature, you need to grow up.

Posted by: dnk at September 10, 2006 4:42 AM

gunmetalblue: It doesn't matter if ghosts are real or not, the fact that people there believe in them is the reason all the houses have been abandoned. It's pointless to attack someone for what they believe in. Did you really expect the people of Taipei would read your comment and decide to look into vacationing there?

Posted by: abby at September 11, 2006 11:57 AM

I dont believe in ghosts

but i live in an old chinese building

my door locks itself

I awoke and saw a girl vanish into thin air

my bed levitated

I take drugs

I should have to go live there for a few days

Posted by: d r45 at September 18, 2006 9:58 AM

er, who died there and why. was there an ethnic cleansing or something???

Posted by: Paul at September 18, 2006 10:36 AM

i have been there and its amazing.. the best part is the waterslides and a monkey statue which is in the center of the site..People live in them and eat fish from the sea. I belive we would call them squatters.

I recently purchased a house supposedly haunted in Central America. When I first stayed there I had to wear earplugs and a night mask in order not to see and hear what was going on... You would be in a room and suddenly people would start talking, but you were the only one there. Upstairs, the house has several floors, doors would open and close. You would hear steps walking, but there was no one else but you in the house....

When I first went to the house, a huge black butterfly flew into the kitchen from an atrium adjacent to the livingroom. I thought it interesting, except that the butterfly followed me to my hotel perhaps one quarter of a mile away. There a boy cought it, when he noticed that I was looking at it with surprise he asked me if I wanted him to kill it. I told the young man to release it instead, and it flew away in the direction of the house. I thought the whole thing interesting....

Its a vacation home and still under renovation. Well, so one day I fly from New York, where I am a professor of mathematics at a local university. You know; we are not supposed to believe in these things ;), not even admit that we have had unusual experiences... I arrive at my house at about 8 pm, after a very very very long journey. I go upstairs to the huge kitchen, a cold wind starts blowing... It was strange. I had already the feelings that something was unusual about the place. But I decided not to pay attention. I bring an inflatable matress and inflate it in the first floor. I turn out the lights, and all kinds of strange phenomena starts happening... It was too wierd, and could not be easily explained unless someone had installed devices that would produce it. I think a minute and decide that perhaps this called for an approach other than calling some local police person, something that crossed my mind. I mean, can you imagine an American going to a policeman and telling him that there are people talking and walking, people that, well, are not supposed to be there. Besides, you know, I am a PhD in mathematics, and not supposed to admit that these things exist...

So I get up from my air mattress, and go upstairs almost naked and say outloud something like. "Ok guys and gals I know you are here. The honest truth is that I dont care. We can share this house, but I will have to renovate the place because I can't live in a 300 years old house without fixing it. I promise that I will maintain the house in proper order, you dont have to go anywhere. You can stay here if you want. If you want to help me, this is my suggestion; if you know that something strange is going to happen in this house let me know. Also keep an eye on the workers and dont bother them unless you think they are not honest.... But you have to promise me that you will never bother me unless you have to warn me of some danger in this world, and also promise me that you will not touch me ever."

Then I go downstairs and put on a night mask and earplugs and go to sleep. Nothing more was heard that night, and no one touched me.

I spent about 5 days in the house, and noticed that a strange little bird was living in the livingroom on the second floor. It had a nest in the corner of ther room near the ceiling, about 17 feet up. I thought it was really cute, and told the workers and the architect that they were not to touch its nest, nor drive it out of the house.

I sleep in the house peacefuly for the rest of my stay. The day of my departure is upon me, and I go to the bathroom and flush the toilet. Everything was fine because the toilet had just been installed a week before my arrival and had worked the whole time perfectly. The toile flushes, but then it would not stop filling up with water. In other words, had I not been there water would have flooded the whole first floor of the hosue which is partially submerged and under the outside level. I notice the problem and fix it. But suddenly the realization that perhaps my new friends had warned me of a possible future problem dawned on me. So I called the architect and told him to install a faucet that could be turned off and prevent water from going into the toilet water retainer when the house was left alone for long periods of time. I also told him to do the same in the other five bathrooms.

That is not the end of the story, some very rough workers that were sleeping in the penthouse after I left, were apparently driven out of the house and would not return. When the architect told me that over the phone, I sort of smiled. I asked him to explain what happened. Well, you can imagine what he told me. He said that people would touch them at night. They would call them from the side, but no one was there... All this stuff. Then he said something like, "I dont know if you know, but people say your house is haunted". I assured him that it was not true.

Subsequently, I returned to the house, and brought my new friends flowers from New York. I also had a gardener plant a few plants in the penthouse. I had told the story to a woman who is sort of mystical here in New York, and she told me to bring them perfume aslo. So I did. When I arrived in the house an amazing air of happiness overtook me, and the most delicate breaze began blowing in the second floor. It was as if whatever was there was happy to see me return. I said outloud something like, "I am happy to be back and look forward to a peaceful stay. I brought you some wine flowers, and perfume." That night I went to the penthouse and had a glass fancy wine up there,
and offered my new friends wine, and even left a candle that burning for them, as my friend in New York had suggested. It was funny, because I never thought I would be dealing with unearthly forces.

Honestly, the house is a wonderful place and I dont even need to wear earplugs and a sleeping mask at night. I go about the place at night, and notice nothing. But somehow I get the feeling that my friends are there. I think they are happy, also I think now that I look back, that they wanted me to buy that house, but I dont have the time to tell you why I think that is the case.

Once, I walked out to an outdoor cafe near the house and made sure to lock the front door quite well before leaving; no one was in the house. The workers had left hours ago. When I returned the door was wide open. I was perplexed, but suddenly realized that my buddies were telling me that I had to change the lock, something that I had been planning to do, but had forgotten....

Anyway, I can go on with this story for a long time, but have to get an exam ready for my class. The house is a wonderful place to be. I am sorry to inform you though that one of the workers knocked down the nest that was in the second floor's living room. I was very saddened by that...

Sorry about the typos. I wrote this very fast.

wow. what a story. that is something truly amazing. you should honestly write a book about that... i would love to read it! the details are amazing and if it is a true story, not writing it down for others to share in it would be a crime...

This is so creepy! I went there for a weekend with my aunt and uncle when I was little. The beach is called "white sand bay", it had wonderful sunlight and 70's mustard interior. I remember after the weekend of getaway, my parents read about the construction of the buildings weren't stable. I think there was an accident happened to a tourist, so people started to withdraw from that area. I still have pictures of me playing inside of the compound!!! SCARY!

These buildings are haunting, and possibly haunted. To me their beauty is the slow decay they are suffering as much as their interesting shape, they would be a bit dull if they were shiney new. Taiwan's climate tends to reclaim things very quickly, and I guess these will go to dust soon enough.

In Scots law there are three possible verdicts, guilty innocent and not proven. I would say ghosts are not proven. The locals seem to believe these buildings are haunted, their beliefs are real and must be dealt with accordingly, irrespective of whether they are rooted in fact or not.

Posted by: CrazyNick at December 8, 2006 5:54 PM

IT takes a Scot to speak sense.

Not proven. Im with you on that one.

Posted by: True Scot at December 21, 2006 8:18 AM

looks like the builders had no regard for public safety. those broken windows should be tempered glass and should have shattered into a million pieces not leaving jagged pieces hanging there. would never been allowed to build to our north american codes. just think what the insides were built like.
